Frequently Asked Questions
- WHAT'S THE BLAZING TIGER SERIES ACTUALLY ABOUT?
On the surface: spies, thieves, heists, and the complicated relationships between people who lie for a living. Underneath: it's about family — specifically, the families we build when the ones we're born into don't work. A Scotland Yard detective in love with an exiled princess. A legendary thief raising his nephew to be better than him. If you like le Carré's moral complexity but wish someone would occasionally crack a joke, this is your series.
- WHO IS PIERRE ARGILE? IS THAT YOUR REAL NAME?
Pierre Argile is a pen name. The author behind it is Peter Allyn Clay, host of several podcasts, and on social media as Pierre Argile. "Pierre Argile" is French for "Peter Clay" — not exactly deep cover, but then again, the best disguises are the ones hiding in plain sight. Much like Sir Charles Lyght, the author believes that a little mystery makes everything more interesting.
- WHAT INSPIRED THE BLAZING TIGER SERIES?
The original inspiration was a fascination with the idea that the most dangerous people in the world aren't the ones with guns: they're the ones with patience. Lee Kane, the founding figure of the series, was built on that principle: a man in a bowler hat with an umbrella who could dismantle a room without raising his voice. From there, the world grew outward, and the series became about what gets passed down between generations and what gets chosen.
- IS THE BLAZING TIGER SERIES LIKE JAMES BOND?
Only if James Bond had an ex-wife who could kill him, a boss who kept his resignation letters in a desk drawer, and the self-awareness to wonder whether he was the hero or just the most charming person in the room. The Blazing Tiger series shares DNA with Bond: British intelligence, international settings, high-stakes operations, but the characters are messier, the relationships are more complicated, and nobody gets out clean. Think less martini-shaken and more whiskey-neat-with-dirty-ice.

IS THE BLAZING TIGER A REMAKE OF THE PINK PANTHER?
Not a remake! More of a distant cousin who went to a different school. The Pink Panther is certainly part of the DNA. A legendary jewel with a name. A detective with more talent than his superiors want to admit. The idea that a single object can set an entire world of characters in motion. That inspiration is real, and the author has never tried to hide it.
But the Blazing Tiger also draws from the broader tradition of that era. The spy thrillers, the heist films, the character-driven crime fiction of the 1960s and '70s where charm was a weapon and institutions were characters in their own right. There's some Topkapi in the heist mechanics. Some Tinker Tailor in the institutional politics. Some Charade in the way romance and danger occupy the same room without either one apologizing for the other. And yes, some Clouseau in the idea that the most effective person in the building is the one everyone underestimates.
Where the Blazing Tiger diverges is in taking those ingredients seriously. The Pink Panther used the story to lead to comedy. The Blazing Tiger is a thriller that happens to be funny, the humor comes from characters who are witty under pressure, not from slapstick. Nobody falls into a fountain. But someone might steal a necklace during a kiss, which is arguably harder to pull off and significantly more entertaining.
